Walking Stick Height: The Fitting Mistake That Raises Your Fall Risk

Walk into almost any pharmacy or browse any online mobility retailer and you can buy a walking stick in minutes — no measurement, no fitting, no questions asked. That convenience has a cost: a stick that’s the wrong height doesn’t just feel awkward, it changes your posture and your balance every single step you take. If you or someone you’re caring for relies on a walking stick daily, getting the height right is one of the cheapest, fastest things you can do to reduce fall risk — and one of the most commonly skipped.

Why walking stick height is not a minor detail

A walking stick works by letting you transfer some of your body weight through your arm instead of through a painful hip, knee or ankle, and by giving you a wider, more stable base of contact with the ground. Both of those functions depend on the stick being the correct length for your body. Set it too high or too low and the stick stops doing its job properly — and can actively work against you. Physiotherapy guidance is consistent on this point: an improperly sized walking stick compromises stability and balance, and incorrect height adjustment is linked to a higher risk of falls, particularly for older users who are already at greater risk from a fall in the first place.

The wrist-crease method: how a correct fit is actually measured

The measurement used by UK physiotherapists is simple enough to do at home, and it doesn’t require special equipment:

  • Wear your usual shoes. Heel height changes your effective leg length, so measuring in socks and then walking in shoes will throw the fit off.
  • Stand upright on a level surface with your arms relaxed and hanging naturally at your sides — don’t hunch or stretch.
  • Find the crease at your wrist where your hand meets your forearm (technically, the level of the ulnar styloid, the bony bump on the little-finger side of your wrist).
  • Match the top of the stick handle to that crease. With the ferrule (rubber tip) flat on the floor, the handle should sit level with the wrist crease when your arm hangs naturally.
  • Check the elbow angle. When you then grip the handle, your elbow should bend slightly — roughly 15 to 20 degrees, not locked straight and not sharply bent.

This wrist-crease method is the standard starting point used across NHS physiotherapy services, and it’s the same reference point the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy points to as the initial measurement for fitting a walking aid. If you’re choosing a stick for someone else, or buying before the person is available to be measured, measuring the wrist-crease-to-floor distance in their normal shoes gives you the number to buy or adjust to.

Beyond height: the check that’s just as often ignored

Height is the headline issue, but it isn’t the only thing worth checking before you rely on a stick day to day. The rubber ferrule on the base wears down with use, and a worn or perished ferrule loses grip exactly when you need it most — on a wet pavement or a polished floor. It costs very little to replace and takes seconds to check: look for visible tread, and make sure it isn’t cracked, smooth, or loose on the shaft. If you’ve bought an adjustable stick, also confirm the height-adjustment button clicks fully into its hole rather than resting on the edge of it — a partially engaged adjustment button is a known cause of a stick suddenly telescoping under weight.

Buy for fit, not just for price

This is where the consumer-choice point matters more than it might seem. Mobility aids are sold the way any other retail product is sold — by price, by finish, by delivery speed — and a walking stick that looks identical to another one online can be entirely wrong for the person using it. Nobody selling you a stick is obliged to measure you first, and most won’t. That responsibility sits with the buyer, or with whoever is buying on a relative’s behalf. If you’re not confident measuring at home, the NHS route is to ask a GP, physiotherapist or occupational therapist to check the fit — particularly useful if there’s an existing joint condition, a recent fall, or uneven strength on one side of the body, where a stick’s height needs adjusting to something other than the standard formula. An adjustable stick is generally the safer default purchase precisely because it lets you correct for a measurement that’s slightly off, rather than being locked into a fixed length that turns out to be wrong once you’re actually walking on it.

Measure to the wrist crease in your normal shoes, aim for a slight bend at the elbow, and don’t treat the ferrule as a lifetime part. None of this costs anything beyond a few minutes, and it’s the difference between a walking stick that quietly does its job and one that’s adding to the very fall risk it was bought to reduce.
