Independent validation
For blood pressure, check the device is on the British & Irish Hypertension Society (BIHS) validated list. For glucose meters, look for compliance with EN ISO 15197:2015.

Around half of people with high blood pressure in England are undiagnosed, and an estimated 1.2 million people in the UK have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes — so home monitoring genuinely helps. But it never replaces professional advice. Take your readings to a GP or pharmacist, and seek urgent help if you feel unwell, regardless of what a device shows. Are home blood pressure monitors actually accurate?
They can be — if you choose a device that's been independently validated by the British & Irish Hypertension Society (BIHS), use an upper-arm cuff that fits properly, and follow the measurement steps. The BIHS keeps a free, public list of validated monitors, and recommends replacing a home monitor after a maximum of four years.
What does the ISO standard on glucose meters mean?
EN ISO 15197:2015 is the accuracy benchmark a blood glucose meter should meet for CE marking. In practice it requires 95% of results to fall within ±0.83 mmol/L of a lab value at lower concentrations, or within ±15% at higher ones. Look for a meter that states compliance.
Why can pulse oximeter readings be misleading?
Research from NHS England's COVID Oximetry @home scheme found readings can run higher on people with darker skin tones, meaning low oxygen levels may be missed. The MHRA advises watching the trend in your readings over time rather than relying on a single number, and seeking help based on how you feel.
Do I need the most expensive device?
No. Independent validation and the correct method matter far more than price or extra features. A modest, validated upper-arm monitor will outperform a pricier wrist gadget that isn't on the BIHS list.
