Anyone living in a hard-water part of the UK has probably stood in a supermarket aisle weighing up a filter jug against an electronic descaler, both promising an end to kettle scale and cloudy glasses. The marketing on both boxes is confident. The evidence behind it is more mixed — and worth understanding before you spend money on either.
What a Standard Filter Jug Actually Removes
Most household filter jugs, including the market-leading Brita range, work with two materials packed into a cartridge: activated carbon and an ion-exchange resin. The carbon is genuinely effective at what it is designed for — stripping out chlorine, organic compounds and the taste and odour they leave behind. That is the improvement most people notice first: water that tastes cleaner straight from the tap.
Limescale reduction is a separate claim, and a smaller one. Standard cartridges reduce some of the calcium and magnesium that causes limescale through ion exchange, but they do not eliminate it. Manufacturers have responded by launching cartridges specifically engineered for hardness — Brita's Maxtra Pro Limescale Expert is one example — which are designed to target carbonate hardness more aggressively and can cut limescale-forming minerals by roughly 50 to 70 per cent, depending on the cartridge and how hard your local water actually is. They do not remove calcium or magnesium from the water at all. Instead, they use an electromagnetic field to alter the crystal structure of those minerals as the water passes through, on the theory that the altered crystals are less likely to stick to pipes, heating elements and taps.
Whether that consistently works is genuinely disputed. Some households report less visible scale after fitting one; others see no change, and the effect appears to depend heavily on local water chemistry and how the unit is installed. What UK Regulators Actually Say About Hardness
This is the part most marketing skips. The Drinking Water Inspectorate, which sets and enforces UK drinking water quality standards, does not set a limit for hardness, calcium or magnesium in tap water. Hard water is not classified as a health risk, and there is some evidence pointing to modest health benefits from the minerals it contains. Where water companies do artificially soften supplies, current guidance recommends they keep a minimum hardness of around 150 mg/l as calcium carbonate, partly because of a possible link between water hardness and cardiovascular health through magnesium intake.
WRAS, the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme, has a narrower job than people often assume. It certifies that a plumbing product connected to the mains will not contaminate the water supply, waste water or cause backflow problems — it does not test or certify how well a device removes limescale. A filter jug with a hardness-specific cartridge is a low-cost, no-installation answer to the first problem and a partial answer to the second. An electronic descaler is a bigger outlay for a whole-house effect that is not guaranteed to work in every property. A full ion-exchange softener is the only option that genuinely removes hardness throughout the house, but it is a proper installation with an ongoing salt cost, and most plumbers recommend keeping one unsoftened tap for drinking and cooking.
None of this needs to be complicated by sales pressure. If a product is being sold on the promise that it will "eliminate" limescale rather than reduce it, that is worth treating with the same scepticism this site applies to any health or home product that oversells what independent evidence supports.
