Threshold Ramps for a Single Step: Portable, Rubber or Fixed?

Not every access problem needs a full ramp and a Disabled Facilities Grant application. Often the only obstacle between a wheelchair or mobility scooter user and their own front room is a single low step at the doorway — a raised UPVC door sill, a slight change of level between hallway and kitchen, or a step down into the garden. For that job, the product that matters is a threshold ramp, not the long sloped structures most ramp guidance is written for. Choosing the right one comes down to three questions: what material suits the location, what weight it actually needs to carry, and whether a shop-bought portable ramp is enough or the situation calls for an occupational therapist.

Rubber, aluminium or GRP: what the material actually buys you

Threshold ramps for a single low step are typically made from one of three materials, and each suits a slightly different situation.

Rubber ramps are the most forgiving option for a doorway. They grip well in wet conditions, flex slightly underfoot and under a wheel, and many are self-adhesive, so they can be pressed into place without tools or fixings. Rubber ramps are also sold as stackable wedge sections, which is useful where the actual rise varies from a few millimetres to a few inches depending on the door or the room.

Aluminium ramps are the lightweight, portable choice. They fold flat for storage or for travel, and most have a ribbed or anodised non-slip surface. Many are designed specifically to sit over a UPVC sill, with a rubber lip or grip strip along the base to stop the ramp sliding when a wheel rolls onto it. Because they’re light, they’re also the easiest option for a family member to lift in and out if the ramp only needs to be down during the day.

GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) ramps turn up more often in fixed, outdoor, or semi-permanent installations. They’re slip-resistant, tolerate UV exposure and weather without degrading the way some rubbers can outdoors, and need essentially no maintenance once installed. GRP is the material of choice when a threshold ramp is going to live outside, bolted down, for years rather than months.

What weight capacity actually needs to cover

The number printed on a ramp’s packaging is not just the user’s body weight — it has to cover the user, the wheelchair or scooter itself, and anything carried. A powered wheelchair alone can weigh well over 200kg before anyone sits in it, which is why sensible guidance is to buy a ramp rated comfortably above the combined weight you expect to put on it, not exactly at it.

In practice, capacities vary a great deal by product type. Small portable aluminium ramps commonly sit somewhere in the 275–475kg range depending on their length and construction. Heavier-duty ramps, including many designed for scooters and powered chairs over a fixed threshold, are commonly rated around 500kg, and some modular or reinforced rubber and aluminium systems are tested well beyond that. The point isn’t to chase the highest number available — it’s to add up the actual load, user plus equipment plus anything typically carried such as shopping, and buy with genuine headroom rather than cutting it fine.

Portable and self-adhesive, or a fixed installation?

This is the decision that most families get wrong in one direction or the other — either buying something flimsy for a permanent daily obstacle, or arranging a full assessment for a problem a modest rubber wedge would solve.

A portable or self-adhesive threshold ramp is the right call when:

  • The step is genuinely small — broadly the kind of single low rise a UPVC door sill or an internal step between rooms creates, not a full flight or a significant drop to a driveway.
  • The need might change — a temporary mobility issue after surgery, a visiting relative who uses a wheelchair occasionally, or a household still working out its long-term needs.
  • The ramp needs to move — between a front and back door, in and out of a car boot, or between properties.
  • It’s an indoor or sheltered location, where a self-adhesive rubber or lightweight aluminium ramp won’t be exposed to standing water or heavy weather.

A fixed, built-in threshold ramp — and the occupational therapist visit that should come before it — is the right call when the step is part of a permanent daily route in and out of the home, the household includes someone whose mobility need is long-term rather than temporary, or the ramp needs to integrate with other work such as a widened doorway or a level-access path. This is also the point at which funding routes such as the Disabled Facilities Grant become relevant: the grant is means-tested for adults, requires the adaptation to be assessed as necessary by an occupational therapist, and is applied for through the local council rather than bought directly. A portable ramp bought from a mobility shop bypasses that process entirely — which is exactly why it’s the wrong tool for a permanent structural fix, but the right one for a problem that genuinely doesn’t need a structural fix.

The safest way to buy a threshold ramp is to work backwards from the actual step, not from whatever ramp is cheapest or most heavily advertised. Measure the rise in millimetres, add up the real combined weight it needs to carry, decide honestly whether the need is temporary or permanent, and only then choose between a self-adhesive rubber wedge, a portable aluminium ramp, or a fixed installation that goes through an occupational therapist. For the single-step problem at most UK front doors, that’s usually a smaller and cheaper decision than the word ramp makes it sound — but getting the material and the weight rating right is what stops a sensible fix from becoming a trip hazard.
