Most people planning a wet room conversion research cost first and space second — if they research space at all. That is the wrong order. A beautifully tiled, correctly sloped wet room is still a failure if a wheelchair cannot turn inside it, or if a walking frame cannot get through the door. Before you agree a design with an installer or a council occupational therapist, it is worth knowing the actual minimum dimensions involved, so you can check what you are being offered rather than simply trusting the drawing.
This is a straightforward space-planning question, but it is one that gets skipped in a lot of quotes and brochures, which tend to show a finished room rather than a dimensioned floor plan.
The Wheelchair Turning Circle: What 1500mm Actually Means
The benchmark figure used across UK accessible-design guidance, including Approved Document M and BS 8300, is a clear turning circle of 1500mm by 1500mm (sometimes expressed as a 1500mm diameter). That is the unobstructed floor space a wheelchair user needs to rotate a full 360 degrees without reversing, backing into a wall, or having to shuffle in stages.
The important detail is the word "clear". That 1500mm circle can overlap with fixed fittings like a basin or a toilet as long as nothing physically blocks the wheelchair's path through that zone — but it cannot overlap with a swing door, a fixed shower screen, or a step. If your installer's drawing places the turning circle half under a vanity unit that actually projects into the floor space, it does not count. Ask to see the turning circle marked on the plan, not just described in the specification.
Minimum Floor Space for a Fully Accessible Wet Room
Guidance under Approved Document M sets a recommended minimum footprint of 2450mm by 2450mm for a fully wheelchair-adaptable wet room containing a shower, toilet and basin. That is the room envelope, not just the shower area — it needs to accommodate the fittings, the turning circle, and safe transfer space at the toilet and basin simultaneously, not one at a time.

A few homes, particularly older terraces and bungalows with small original bathrooms, simply do not have 2450mm to give. That does not automatically rule out a wet room — it usually means combining the bathroom with an adjoining box room or cupboard, or reworking the layout so the turning circle sits in the room's largest clear span rather than trying to force it into an awkward corner. An occupational therapist assessment, which is a normal part of a Disabled Facilities Grant application, exists precisely to work through this kind of layout problem before building work starts.
The Shower Area and Doorway Width Are Not the Same Question
It is worth separating two things that quotes sometimes blur together: the shower zone itself, and the doorway into the room. A shower area of roughly 900mm by 1200mm gives enough space to wash and to transfer from a wheelchair or shower chair, with the level-access threshold no higher than 15mm so the change in floor height does not become a trip or catch point.
The doorway is a separate constraint again. A clear opening of at least 775mm is the figure to check — not the door leaf's stated size, which is usually larger than the actual clear gap once the frame and any door-closer mechanism are accounted for. Outward-opening, sliding or pocket doors are generally preferred over inward-opening doors in a wet room, simply because an inward-opening door eats into the turning circle every time it is used, and can become a serious problem if someone falls against it from inside.
What to Actually Check Before Work Starts
None of these figures require specialist knowledge to verify — a tape measure and the table above will confirm whether a design meets them. A few practical checks worth making before signing off any wet room conversion:
- Ask to see the turning circle marked on the actual floor plan, not just referenced in the spec sheet.
- Measure the clear doorway opening yourself, not the door's nominal size on the product listing.
- Check the shower threshold height is specified in millimetres, not described loosely as "low-level" or "near flush".
- If the room is smaller than 2450mm x 2450mm, ask specifically how the design accommodates the turning circle — do not assume it has simply been fitted in.
- Where the work is funded through a council grant, the occupational therapist's assessment report should already reference these dimensions — ask for a copy and check the installer's plan matches it.
A wet room that looks finished in photographs can still fail on the numbers that actually matter day to day. Getting the turning circle, the shower zone and the doorway width right the first time is considerably cheaper than finding out afterwards that a wheelchair cannot get through the door.
