Most ramp advice fixates on gradient — how steep is too steep. Width gets a single line, if it gets mentioned at all. That is a problem, because a ramp can be perfectly gradual and still be useless if it is too narrow for the wheelchair, powerchair or mobility scooter that actually needs to cross it. If you are choosing or sizing a ramp for your own home, wheelchair ramp width deserves the same scrutiny as the slope.

The Width Figure UK Guidance Actually Specifies

UK accessibility guidance for domestic ramps, set out in Approved Document M and the companion British Standard BS 8300-2:2018, points to a minimum clear, unobstructed width of 900mm for a straight ramp run in a dwelling. "Clear width" means the usable space between any handrails, edge upstands or walls — not the outer dimension of the ramp deck, which is a distinction worth checking when a supplier quotes a width. A ramp advertised as "900mm wide" that measures the outer frame, with handrails eating into that space, will not actually deliver 900mm of usable width.

900mm is a minimum, not a target. It is enough for most standard manual and powered wheelchairs to pass through comfortably in a straight line, but it leaves very little margin either side. For anyone using a wider powerchair, a mobility scooter, or a wheelchair with add-on attachments, 900mm can feel tight, particularly if there is a handrail on one or both sides reducing the usable gap further.

Landings Matter As Much As the Ramp Deck

Width is only half the picture. Guidance also specifies a level landing at the top and bottom of a ramp, generally at least 1200mm by 1200mm, measured clear of any door swing. This is the space a wheelchair user needs to stop safely, operate a door handle or key safe, and reposition without rolling backward down the slope. A ramp that meets the 900mm width rule but opens onto a landing eaten into by an outward-opening door is not genuinely accessible, whatever the ramp itself measures.

Where a ramp cannot run in a single straight flight — because of limited garden or path length — it needs an intermediate landing, and any turn changes the width calculation. A 180-degree turn requires enough landing space for a wheelchair to rotate, which is a larger footprint than the ramp’s running width alone suggests. This is where DIY ramp plans and off-the-shelf portable ramps most often fall short: they are sized for the straight-line case and simply do not account for a turn.

Where 900mm Is Not Enough in Practice

The regulatory minimum assumes a fairly typical manual wheelchair. It does not comfortably account for:

  • Powered wheelchairs and larger scooters, which are often wider across the wheelbase than a manual chair and need more clearance to avoid catching a handrail.
  • Bariatric wheelchairs, which can be significantly wider than standard models and may need a bespoke width assessment rather than an off-the-shelf ramp.
  • Two-way traffic, such as a carer walking alongside the wheelchair rather than following behind — a scenario the 900mm figure was never designed to cover.
  • Households with more than one wheelchair or scooter user, where different users may need different clearances.

What to Check Before You Buy or Install

The practical, consumer-facing version of all this guidance comes down to a short list: measure your own doorway and path width before assuming a standard ramp will fit; ask any installer or supplier to confirm whether their quoted width is the clear usable space or the outer deck dimension; check the landing space at both ends, not just the ramp itself, especially where a door opens outward; and if the household includes or may in future include a powered wheelchair or larger scooter, size for that now rather than replacing a too-narrow ramp later. A ramp that technically meets the 900mm minimum but was chosen without checking these details is a common source of buyer disappointment — the ramp arrives, and the chair does not comfortably fit.

Getting wheelchair ramp width right at the planning stage is far cheaper than correcting it after installation. Whether the ramp is a permanent fixture funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant or a portable unit bought outright, the same principle holds: measure the actual equipment that will use it, check the clear width rather than the advertised width, and treat the landing space as part of the ramp, not an afterthought. If an occupational therapist is already involved in the household — as is often the case where funding is being sought — ask them to confirm the width needed for the specific wheelchair or scooter model before any ramp is ordered, rather than relying on a supplier’s generic recommendation.
