How a smart scale actually measures you

Most home "body composition" scales use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A tiny, harmless electrical current passes up one leg and down the other; because lean tissue (which holds water) conducts electricity well and fat resists it, the scale measures that resistance and estimates your body-fat percentage, muscle mass, water and so on.

The crucial word is estimates. The scale never "sees" your fat. It measures one electrical value, then runs it through a built-in formula based on your height, age and sex to predict a number. Change the formula — or your hydration — and the number changes, even though your body hasn't.

Good to know: waist size still wins

For everyday risk, the NHS and NICE lean on simple measures, not fancy scales. A waist over 94cm for men or 80cm for women suggests increased risk, and over 102cm / 88cm a substantially higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. A handy rule of thumb: keep your waist under half your height. A £3 tape measure tells you more about visceral fat than most £100 scales.

    Useful for a household — and check that each person's data stays in their own account rather than a shared cloud feed.

  • Clear data ownership

    Read the privacy policy. Your weight history is sensitive. Look for local storage or an export option, and avoid scales that demand needless personal data.

  • Trend charts, not just snapshots

    Because single readings are unreliable, the real value is in a clean graph that shows direction of travel over weeks.

  • Athlete / pregnancy modes — with a pinch of salt

    Some modes adjust the formula, but none make BIA clinically accurate. Treat them as comfort features, not precision upgrades.

How to get a reading you can trust

Because BIA is so sensitive to conditions, consistency matters far more than the device. Weigh like-for-like and the trend becomes meaningful.
